Oder: Wie bastle ich mir meine eigenen Vergangenheiten?

Die Archäologie produziert möglichst inhaltlich, formal und methodologisch kohärentes Wissen über die Vergangenheit. Zugleich wird dies aber in jeweils bestehende personale Wissensbestände der ‚interessierten Öffentlichkeit‘ eingepasst und von archäologischer Seite jegliche auftretenden Sinnveränderungen als Missverständnisse oder Instrumentalisierung verstanden. Der Artikel fokussiert auf die Frage, warum auf personaler Ebene verschiedene Vergangenheitsvorstellungen konkurrieren können, ohne sich entweder beständig zu widersprechen und aufzuheben oder zu einem kohärenten Vergangenheitsbild zusammengefügt zu werden. Dazu wird Vergangenheit als Wissensraum verstanden, der sich mit den Raumvorstellungen von Henri Lefebvre und David Harvey analysieren lässt. Abschließend wird versucht, sich dem vielschichtigen Konstruktionsprozess des Wissensraumes Vergangenheit durch das Konzept der Bastelei/Bricolage nach Claude Lévi-Strauss zu nähern

Comparative study of the growth of sputtered aluminum oxide films on organic and inorganic substrates

We present a comparative study of the growth of the technologically highly relevant gate dielectric and encapsulation material aluminum oxide in inorganic and also organic heterostructures. Atomic force microscopy studies indicate strong similarities in the surface morphology of aluminum oxide films grown on these chemically different substrates. In addition, from X-ray reflectivity measurements we extract the roughness exponent \beta of aluminum oxide growth on both substrates. By renormalising the aluminum oxide roughness by the roughness of the underlying organic film we find good agreement with \beta as obtained from the aluminum oxide on silicon oxide (\beta = 0.38 \pm 0.02), suggesting a remarkable similarity of the aluminum oxide growth on the two substrates under the conditions employed

Are all things created equal? The incidental in archaeology

Archaeologists evince a strong tendency to impute significance to the material traces they study, a propensity that has been especially marked since the post-processual emphasis on meaning and that has taken on renewed vigour with the turn to materiality. But are there not situations in which things are rather incidental or insignificant? This set of essays emerged from a workshop held in Berlin in April 2018, in which a group of scholars was invited to discuss the place of the incidental in social life in general and in archaeology in particular. Rather than lengthy formal papers, we offer an introduction that presents a general set of reflections on the issue of the incidentalness of things, followed by essays that pursue particular directions raised by that introduction as well as our discussions in Berlin. It is our hope that these brief forays into a complex topic will stimulate further work on this subject
